Good Morning, Boise State 3/14: Bronco MBB Not Nearly Done Yet

The Boise State MBB team defeated San Diego State, 62-52, on Thursday, advancing to the semifinal round of the Mountain West Basketball Championship.

Good Morning, Bronco Nation! The Boise State MBB team overcame an 11-point, first-half deficit and defeated San Diego State, 62-52, on Thursday in the quarterfinal round of the Mountain West Basketball Championship.
 
Four players scored in double figures led by Alvaro Cardenas, who registered a team-high 16 points. He added two rebounds and four assists, and logged over 37 minutes in the game.

The Broncos move onto the MW Basketball Championship semifinals, taking on the No. 1 Seed New Mexico Lobos this evening at 7:30 p.m. MT.

🔼 McGovern the Math Whiz. Elaina McGovern's time at Boise State will include two degrees and and a summer experience at one of the nation's top research programs. Up next: pursuing a PhD in biostatistics.

🔼 Commencing Conference Play. Boise State softball enters Mountain West play at Fresno State—the squad’s second of three trips to California this season—today through Sunday (March 14-16, 7 p.m./3 p.m./Noon) with a record of 19-6. The Broncos are 16-6 away from home, including 4-0 in true road games. Boise State is receiving votes in the NFCA/GoRout Top 25 for the third-consecutive week.

Last year, these teams split four contests in Boise, with Fresno State winning two of three in the regular season and Boise State eliminating the Bulldogs in the MW Championship. The Broncos are 7-3 against the Bulldogs under head coach Justin Shults.

🔼 Xtra Special Night. The No. 28 Broncos will host their last gymnastics home meet of the season against No. 22 Southern Utah, honoring the squad’s seniors this evening at 7 p.m. MT at ExtraMile Arena.

Boise State is still the only team in the Mountain West undefeated at home, boasting a 4-0 home record on the season. If the Broncos defeat the Thunderbirds, it will mark their first undefeated home record since 2021.

🔼 We’re Gonna Need a Bigger Trophy Case. Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty has been named a finalist for the 95th James E. Sullivan Award, presented annually to the most outstanding collegiate or Olympic athlete in the United States.

🔼  Home ‘N’ Away. The Boise State women’s tennis team will open its conference schedule with a home match against Fresno State at 10 a.m. MT this morning at BOAS Indoor Tennis Center. The Broncos will then face San Jose State at noon on Sunday, March 16, in San Jose, California.

The Broncos are a perfect 8-0 at home this season, matching the best home start since the 2012-13 season.

🔼 Spring Fling in Swing. The Boise State men’s tennis team – ranked 38th nationally – hosts the 2025 Spring Fling tournament this weekend, featuring Montana State and Kennesaw State.

Boise State will face Montana State twice, at 2 p.m. MT today and 5 p.m. on Saturday. The Broncos will take on Kennesaw State from Georgia at 6 p.m. this evening. A neutral match between MSU and KSU will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

With an overall record of 9-4, the Broncos are coming off a third-place finish at the Diablos College Invitational.
