Good Morning, Boise State 5/7: MW Showdown in San Diego

Boise State softball opens the 2025 MW Softball Championship today against Utah State in San Diego, California.

Good Morning, Bronco Nation! The Boise State softball team opens the 2025 Mountain West Softball Championship today at 3 p.m. PT/4 p.m. MT against Utah State in San Diego, California. The Broncos swept the Aggies in a three-game series at home to close the regular season and earn the No. 4 seed. Utah State is the No. 5 seed.

In 2023, Boise State won the regular season before going 1-2 at the MW Championship. Last season, the Broncos went 3-2 as the No. 6 seed and lost to top-seed San Diego State in the final.

πŸ”Ό Pleasantly Predictable Props. Boise State first baseman Makenzie Butt was named the Mountain West Softball Freshman of the Year, Tuesday. It is the second-straight year the Broncos have earned the award (Sophia Knight) and fifth time overall. Butt and Knight were each named All-Mountain West First Team.

Butt is batting .365 with 22 home runs and 76 RBI. Her home run total is a Boise State record and ties the MW freshman record. She is the seventh freshman in NCAA history with 20+ home runs and 75+ RBI and leads freshmen nationally in both categories this season.

πŸ”Ό Boise State Hits the Books. Boise State Athletics recorded a multi-year all-department Academic Progress Rate (APR) of 991 in data, matching last year's multi-year mark. The APR provides a measure of each team's academic performance.

Boise State teams with perfect single-year scores included: women's basketball, beach volleyball, women's cross country, women's golf, gymnastics, soccer, men's tennis, women's tennis, women's track and field and volleyball.

πŸ”Ό In His Lane. The Boise State football team has announced the signing of transfer EDGE Sterling Lane II, who spent three seasons at Arizona. Lane will join as a redshirt junior with two years of eligibility remaining. He totaled 33 tackles in 20 games with the Wildcats.

Lane was a four-star recruit and 29th-ranked player from California, according to 247Sports. He was a two-way player at Oaks Christian HS, seeing time at defensive end and tight end. In two seasons, he registered 116 tackles, including 75 solo.
