🔷 ONE BIG THING
Sophomore Kasey Aguinaga and freshman Abby Dowell combined on a three-hit shutout as Boise State defeated host UT Arlington 6-0 to cap off the team’s four-game win streak at the Maverick Invitational. The duo combined to strike out six Mavericks and give Boise State its first shutout of the season.
🗣️ "Our team continues to be resilient. I am proud of the way we played after dropping the first game of the weekend. We continue to learn from our mistakes and build on our successes." - head coach Justin Shults
Offensively, Sophia Knight became the first Bronco to hit safely in her first 10 games and the second in school history to start a season with a 10-game hitting streak. Keely Goushá was 2-for-2 with a triple, an RBI, and a run while Hollie Farmer drove in two runs of her own. Boise State capped off its tournament with a total of 40 runs scored in Texas en route to its 4-1 record. Next up, the Broncos will travel to take on McNeese on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
📈 STOCK UP
🔼 Back In Treasure Valley. Looking to gain some ground in the race to the top of the Mountain West standings, Boise State men’s basketball will take on San Jose State tonight at The X at 8:30 p.m. The Broncos come into the match 0.5 games back of two teams tied for first place, and at home this season, the Broncos are 11-2. The last time the Broncos faced off against the Spartans, the Blue and Orange hit the road for its first conference game of the season and earned a convincing 78-69 win. The Broncos have been led by the quartet of Chibuzo Agbo, Tyson Degenhart, Max Rice and O’Mar Stanley, who are averaging double-digit points per game.
🔼 Syd The Kid. Boise State sophomore infielder Sydney Groves was named Mountain West Player of the Week following her performance at the Maverick Invitational. The Meridian, Idaho native batted .545 during the first four games of the Maverick Invitational in Arlington, Texas and helped lead the Broncos to three wins. Groves drove in 12 runs, including tying a school single-game record with eight against DePaul. The award comes after fellow teammate Sophia Knight earned week one’s honor.
🔼 Beach Days. Boise State beach volleyball will make its return to the sand for the team’s first tournament of 2024 at the Cactus Classic. There, the Broncos will go head-to-head against four teams in Tucson, Ariz., on Friday and Saturday. The first day of the Cactus Classic will see the Broncos open up the season against Cal State Bakersfield, followed by a match against Colorado Mesa. On Saturday, the Blue and Orange will close out its tournament with matches against San Francisco and Arizona.
🔼 Beach Days. Boise State women's tennis lost a close match to Minnesota 5-2 at the Boas Indoor Tennis Center. The Broncos took an early lead over the Golden Gophers, starting with a 6-2 victory on court two as Pauline Ernstberger and Shauna Heffernan while Nicole Discenza and Lorelyz Marruffo clinched the doubles point with a 7-6(2) match win. The Broncos will take a week off before traveling to take on Wisconsin on March 1. Boise State will also play DePaul the following day.
