Good Morning Bronco Nation 2/9: Return of the Bats
Today, Ninety Bronco student-athletes earn Academic All-MW and football finishes with highest rated recruiting class in the MW
Good morning! This season, Boise State golf will honor the lives of local soldiers. Both teams have a bag honoring their respective fallen soldier that will be carried by a student-athlete at each event.
The men's team's bag will memorialize Army Spc. John G. Borbonus, a 2005 graduate of Boise High School, and the women's team joined the Folds of Honor program with a bag that honors Army Spc. Carrie L. French, a native of Caldwell, Idaho. At the end of the season, the bags will be raffled off with proceeds going to the Folds of Honor Program. 🔷 ONE BIG THING
Following Boise State athletics’ historic fall semester with the highest term and cumulative GPAs in department history, the Broncos had 90 student-athletes named to the Fall 2023 Academic All-Mountain West team. Football led the way with 38 selections, followed by women's soccer with 21. Men's cross country (12), volleyball (11) and women's cross country (8) rounded out the honorees for the Broncos. To be eligible for academic all-conference accolades, student-athletes must have maintained a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or better and must have competed in 50 percent of the team's completed contests.
📈 STOCK UP
🔼 First Pitch. Bronco softball will open up its 2024 season at the Kajikawa Classic. Boise State is coming into the season as the reigning Mountain West regular season champions after going 32-17, including a 16-5 conference record. Over the weekend, the Broncos will play five games in Tempe, Ariz., opening with a game against Northwestern and capped off in a dual against Grand Canyon.
🔼 Road Work. Boise State gymnastics will hit the road to take on No. 36-ranked Southern Utah tonight at 7 p.m. The Broncos are currently ranked 23rd and 24th nationally on floor and beam, respectively. The Broncos are averaging scores of 49.200 on floor and 49.006 on beam. Senior Emily Lopez is tied for 19th nationally on bars (9.900), and Courtney Blackson is coming into the dual fresh off of Mountain West Floor Specialist of the Week honors.
🔼 Split Weekend. Boise State track and field will compete in two separate meets this weekend as the distance runners travel to Seattle, Wash. to compete in The Husky Classic while the sprinters and jumpers head to Albuquerque, N.M., for the Don Kirby Invitational. Last weekend, sprinter Anita Taviore finished fifth in the women’s 200-meter with a time of 24.36, and on the men’s side, freshman Trevor Cogley ran a personal best in the men’s 400-meter with a time of 49.59 for a 13th place finish.
🔼 Best In The Mountain West. In head coach Spencer Danielson’s first recruiting cycle, the 2024 recruiting class for the Broncos, a group that On3 rates at a score of 85.185, achieved the highest mark any current member of the Mountain West has recorded since 2002. The class places the Broncos 64th nationally, the third-highest-ranked recruiting class of non-Power 5 programs. The recruiting class consists of 28 total additions with 15 signees already on the Boise State campus preparing to begin spring practice. Of that group of 28 additions, three – Clay Martineau, Hayden Hanks and Trevor McKenna – were ranked in the top five of their respective home states.
