Good Morning Bronco Nation 4/22: That Winning Feeling

Today, men's tennis is champions of the Mountain West and a Spring Game recap

Good morning! Change is coming to the football field for the 2024 season. The NCAA passed multiple rules that will be implemented next season including automatic timeouts, communication between players and coaches via technology and replay.

🔷 ONE BIG THING

For the third time in program history, Boise State men's tennis won a share of the Mountain West Regular Season Championship with its 4-0 victory at New Mexico. Jip Van Assendelft won his 16th singles match of the year, and Idriss Haddouch's 17th consecutive singles victory improved him to a team-best 22- 10 overall, 18-1 in team duals, and undefeated in conference play at 6-0.

🗣️ “I'm proud of this team. We have a lot more of the season ahead of us, though. On to Vegas for the conference championship (tournament)!" - Luke Shields, head coach

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 Cherry On Top. Boise State beach volleyball battled all the way to the finals, and nearly pulled off the comeback, but fell 3-2 to top-seeded Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the Southland Conference Championship Dual. The Broncos closed out the year with a 31-12 record, the best in program history. Boise State duos Addison Wolden and Abbie Wolf and Sharli O'Neil and Elli Wolthuis finished undefeated at the Southland Conference Tournament.

🗣️ “It's always hard to lose at the end of the season, but we have to keep our heads up. We had a great year and the growth of our program is undeniable. Our future is very, very bright." - Allison Voigt, head coach

🔼 Spring Action. 7,137 members of Bronco Nation witnessed offensive fireworks and defensive play-stoppers during the Boise State Spring Game. The Broncos’ final spring session featured an offense versus defense format with the defensive unit claiming the 47-29 victory. Ashton Jeanty, a HEI2MAN candidate entering the 2024 season, unsurprisingly led the ground attack by averaging 10.8 yards per carry. The quarterback quartet of Max Cutforth, Colt Fulton, Malachi Nelson and CJ Tiller threw for 223 yards and one touchdown with only one interception.

🔼 Full Bloom. Four Broncos drove in two runs and Boise State beat Nevada 8-3 in the rubber matchup of the three-game Mountain West series. Jenna Bloom pitched six innings of one-run ball and struck out seven — the most for Bloom in a conference game this season — to earn the victory. On offense, Sophia Knight and Sydney Groves each finished 2-for-4 at the plate. Next up, the Broncos will travel to Idaho State for a midweek matchup on April 24.

🔼 Good Note. Boise State women’s tennis took down Utah State 4-1 in the team’s regular-season finale. The win marked the fourth time in four seasons that the team ended things off with a win. The Broncos will now head to play the Mountain West Championship in Las Vegas, Nev., from April 24-27.

🔼 Captain Brave. Boise State football has been practicing all spring, getting better, getting stronger, but Weston Derrick has been the one who has continually defined what it means to be strong for him, his family and the Boise State football team. Read more about Derrick’s journey and the impact he has had on the team, as well as head coach Spencer Danielson.

🔼 Honoring A Legend. The 2024 Urresti Golf Tournament will be held in honor of Rich Urresti, who passed away in March earlier this year. Richard "Rich" Joseph Urresti would start in 13 games for the Blue and Orange over his career, mostly at blocking back in 1962 and at fullback in 1963, finishing the season third on the team in rushing. He was a model Boise State Bronco alumnus, fan, and booster. An All-American honoree running back for the Broncos, Rich was a strong supporter of the Varsity B Club. He worked diligently to make the annual Gus Urresti Golf Tournament a success to benefit the Gus Urresti Endowment for football.

🔼 In Loving Memory. Boise State track and field star, Jose Guillermo "Memo" Uribe, 51, passed away on April 13, 2024. Uribe's Bronco legacy is marked by remarkable achievements, earning two NCAA All-America awards during his career and being inducted into the Boise State Hall of Fame in 2004. In 1996, he became the first Boise State student-athlete to win a Big West Conference Championship when he won the league's cross-country title and made a total of three appearances at the NCAA Cross Country Championships.

🔼 In The Spotlight. First-year graduate assistant, Katie Macare, works within the graphic design branch of the creative services department at Boise State Athletics while pursuing a degree in the Master of Athletic Leadership (MAL) program. As a graphic design GA, Macare specifically works with men's and women's golf, Bronco Athletic Association (BAA) and BroncoLife. Her day-to-day tasks include creating and updating content for the two golf programs, attending meetings, responding to emails and collaborating with other departments on new ideas for graphics.

🤔 BLUE TURF TRIVIA
